Washington Commanders No. 2 pick Jayden Daniels is next in line to be this team’s franchise quarterback, and so far he has checked every box and proven to be every bit as good as advertised.

No one is questioning his preparation or his mentality heading into Week 1, and he recently revealed an interesting quirk about his warm-up routine that will surely catch on at scale if he can lead his Commanders back to consistent levels of success.

During a recent interview hosted by Bryan Colbert Jr. on Next Man Up, Daniels explained why he warms up with a basketball before practice, saying “It’s something I’ve done for a while, it’s just kind of like tricking your mind…obviously a basketball is bigger than a football…when I pick up a football, it’s just smaller in my hand.”

The logic makes sense, and surely we were all hoping for a more interesting or complex answer, but it’s the same reason why basketball players dribble tennis balls to warm up or baseball players swing their bats with heavy donuts on them prior to stepping to the plate.

While much of the preseason attention has been on Chicago Bears’ No. 1 pick and fellow Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams, Daniels has excelled in the preseason in his own right and has officially locked down the Week 1 starting job.

Daniels and his Commanders wrap up the preseason on Sunday against the New England Patriots before preparing for a Week 1 battle at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where Daniels will oppose former No. 1 pick Baker Mayfield.
