The Boston Celtics had a rookie coach last season.

Joe Mazzulla proved to be unprepared to handle some in-game situations in the playoffs, and while he’s a very good foundational coach and did a solid job, he clearly needed more experienced people around him.

That’s why GM Brad Stevens made sure to get Sam Cassell there to give him a hand.

But more than that, it seems like the former point guard is also looking to get the most out of one of their stars.

According to Jaylen Brown, coach Cassell always wants to play him 1-on-1 before every game (via NBA).

Brown revealed that Cassell always wants to get a stop on him before a game, adding that he must probably be up 70-to-10 against him.

Cassell was a very good two-way player in his prime, but he’s literally twice Brown’s age, and he’s not exactly in game shape anymore, so that sixty-game advantage definitely makes sense.

Brown is one of the best and most underrated players in today’s game.

Granted, he doesn’t do himself any favors when he over-dribbles or other teams force him to go left, but those are the only two flaws in his game.

He gets plenty of criticism for being the highest-paid player in the league despite not being even close to being the best, but it’s not like he’s to blame for the CBA.

Also, those pre-game matchups with Cassell have clearly worked thus far, so he must make sure to keep them going.
