With 55 games in the books during this 2023-24 NBA regular season, the Boston Celtics are sitting atop the Eastern Conference standings with a record of 43-12, which is currently the best record in the league.
As the top seed in the East, every team in the conference is gunning for the Celtics, hoping to catch or surpass Jayson Tatum and company with less than 30 games to go in the regular season.
During an interview with ESPN’s Malika Andrews over All-Star Weekend, Tatum was asked who he believes is the best player in the league right now and didn’t hesitate to give himself that distinction.
“Myself,” Tatum said. “I got a lot of respect for a lot of guys in the league. Giannis [Antetokounmpo] for sure. [Nikola] Jokic, who obviously just won. [Joel] Embiid. Guys who have won MVPs, and the list goes on. The league is in a great place. I truly believe every night I step on the floor, I’m the best player.”

If Andrews were to ask other superstar-caliber players in the league, like Antetokounmpo, Jokic, and Embiid, they’d all likely give the same answer, and understandably so, as they need that kind of confidence to lead franchises and be where they are at in their playing careers in the NBA.
As for Tatum, the pressure is on in Boston, with the team reloading and adding Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday in the NBA offseason, and the expectations have been higher than ever since he was drafted by the team.
That said, Tatum’s confidence will be paramount to the team’s success moving forward.
