Nowadays, NBA fans often get too tangled up in stats.

Box-score watching is far from the best way to understand the game, as context also matters.

Notably, that’s exactly why Jaylen Brown wound up winning the Eastern Conference Finals MVP.

Brown made big play after big play throughout the course of the series.

So, while Jayson Tatum’s numbers were objectively better, he wasn’t as impactful or determined to win this series as Brown was.

With that in mind, Tatum tipped his hat to his teammate, stating that it was ‘special’ to watch him win the award (via Celtics on NBC Sports Boston).

“That was special,” Tatum said.

“That was special.”

Tatum averaged 30.3 points and 10.3 rebounds, while Brown averaged 29.8 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

It was an easy decision for some of the voters, as Brown hit some big shots down the stretch, including an epic game-tying three-pointer in Game 1 to force overtime and avoid a major upset.

Tatum had turned the ball over and missed five shots in that fourth quarter, and while he put the game out of reach in overtime, Brown’s efforts put the team in a position to win.

That was the case for most of the series.

Tatum dominated in the first three quarters, and Brown then finished them off with some timely shot-making.

His defense was also on full display late in games.

Now, it’s all about doing it on the biggest stage.
