The Boston Celtics have been quite close to the big prize, but fell short in their last trip to the NBA Finals.
Jayson Tatum led the team in their run to the ultimate stage, but he couldn’t get the job done.
Notably, that’s why he thinks he’s not getting as much credit for the way he’s played as other players.
Talking to TalkBasket, the Duke product admitted that the narrative around him changed since he lost in the Finals, and he admitted that he might have some ground to make up now (via NBA Central).
“Apparently us losing the Finals two years ago affects what people think of me now, so I guess I’ve got some ground to make up,” Tatum said.

Tatum has posted MVP-caliber numbers for the past three years or so, and this could finally be his year.
Joel Embiid is no longer eligible for the award because of the 65-game rule.
Tatum is the best player on the best team in the league, at least record-wise, so it’s shocking to see that he’s not getting that much buzz for the award.
He’s often been criticized for not showing up in big moments, but he wasn’t to blame for his team’s shortcomings in the NBA Finals, so this narrative perhaps isn’t that fair.
Still, with the most crucial stretch of the season still ahead of us and the Celtics already securing a winning season before the All-Star break, he should have more than enough opportunities to turn the narrative around.
At least he’s aware of his situation, and he has more than enough motivation to turn the narrative around.
