Jayson Tatum has been a Boston Celtic for almost seven years now.

However, it wasn’t until this weekend that he got to meet the legendary Larry Bird, arguably the greatest player in franchise history.

As odd as that may have been, the Duke product was pumped and proud of that moment.

He talked about how it was great to meet the ultimate Celtic and such a great player, a guy who also happened to dominate at his position (via Celtics on NBC Sports).

“He’s the ultimate Celtic so it was an honor to meet him,” Tatum said.

Bird has spent years as a key member of the Indiana Pacers organization, so it’s understandable that he’s not out there in Boston trying to work with rival players.

Still, it’s kind of odd to see that they never got a chance to meet when the Celtics visited the Pacers or vice versa.

Bird was the biggest star on the team during his glory days.

Paul Pierce tried to be his heir, and while he did lead the team to an NBA championship and became a team legend, Bird continues to sit on a tier of his own in the Celtics hierarchy.

Tatum, however, does have a chance to become the best forward ever to lace them up for the organization, although he does have a way to go to reach Bird’s level.

Perhaps he’ll do just that this season, as the Celtics are the odds-on favorite to represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals.
