The Boston Celtics have fared quite well in the new In-Season tournament.

They’re currently second behind the surprising Orlando Magic, and it seems like they’re going to make some noise in the elimination round.

However, as well as they’ve fared thus far, Celtics star Jayson Tatum isn’t much of a fan of one particular rule: The point differential.

Tatum believes that it leads to players disrespecting their opponents by trying to drive the score up even during blowout games, which can obviously lead to some scuffles (via Celtics on CLNS).

Jayson Tatum spoke about the #NBA‘s In-Season Tournament:

“The point differential thing, I’m not the biggest fan of it … last Friday where the game was already over and the guys still trying to score, you know, it’s all about respecting the game and respecting your opponents.”… pic.twitter.com/SyPqPTUNgC

Recently, Chicago Bulls star DeMar DeRozan took offense at the fact that Pascal Siakam tried to take a three-pointer late in their loss to the Toronto Raptors, stating that he should’ve respected the unwritten rules and be respectful to their opponents, regardless of the scoreboard or the point differential.

Of course, it’s hard to blame Siakam and the Raptors for doing that if that’s what the rules ask for, and the best way to prevent that is by not allowing your opponent to blow you out in the first place.

It’s a complicated situation, as the players obviously need to do what’s best for their team, and if the point differential mattered in the regular season, they would always take that same approach, regardless of the codes or unwritten rules.

Even so, the In-Season Tournament has been quite fun to watch, at least early on, and props to the Commissioner for this minor tweak to the regular season.
