The New York Mets came into Thursday night’s game against the Washington Nationals with a chip on their shoulder.
New York had lost four games in a row, beginning with two over the weekend to the San Francisco Giants.
They also lost the first two games of their divisional series with the Nationals.
However, Thursday was a new day, and the Mets came out swinging against their division rivals.
It was a wild game, and things were tied up at eight runs apiece in the bottom of the eighth inning.
That’s when Jeff McNeil stepped to the plate.
On a 2-2 pitch, McNeil sent one out to deep right field that hit off the wall and scored Pete Alonso to give New York a 9-8 lead.

The Mets had been on a little bit of a slide.
However, McNeil helped pull them out of it with a key hit when it mattered the most.
The star second baseman had two hits in the game and improved his batting average to .301 on the year.
In 93-at-bats, McNeil has driven in nine runs while posting an OPS of .833.
The Mets were in need of a big hit in the bottom of the eighth, and true to form, McNeil came through in the clutch after New York had squandered a 7-3 lead in the top half of the inning.
McNeil also received a nice payday over the winter, as he and the Mets agreed on a four-year extension.
So far, it has proven worthwhile for the Mets.
