Right now, most people know Jeff Van Gundy as one of the best and most knowledgeable NBA analysts around.
But he has quite a lot of previous experience on coaching crews in the league too.
And he might get more experience soon.
Marc Stein, via NBACentral, is reporting that the Dallas Mavericks “plan to gauge” Van Gundy’s interest in a potential assistant coaching position.

It’s not clear how much interest Van Gundy will have about joining the Mavs as an assistant coach.
It wouldn’t be the first time he’d be an assistant: he was an assistant coach for the New York Knicks from 1989 to 1996.
He then became that team’s head coach for a number of years, leading them to the NBA Finals once.
He was then head coach for the Houston Rockets for four seasons before transitioning to a life on television.
Would the Mavericks be able to woo him away from his comfortable commentator contract?
They would have to offer a sizable deal and a position that would be worth his time.
The Mavericks could certainly use Van Gundy’s expertise.
The team is in a difficult position right now, having fallen like a stone in the second part of the season and missing the playoffs entirely despite hard work and skill from Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
Dallas’ coaching staff will need to work hard to find a way to compete.
Van Gundy could be a huge part of that.
He would have to give up his other job, of course, and he would again be in the tense, draining world of coaching.
Van Gundy will have a lot to consider if the team asks him to take this job.
