Weeks ago, first-year head coach Jerod Mayo made it loud and clear that Jacoby Brissett would be the starter.

He stated that Brissett gave the team a better chance to win at the moment, which was far from a surprise.

Now, that may no longer be the case.

Mayo stated that, just weeks away from the first game of the regular season, he hasn’t made a decision about the starting quarterback job yet (via Patriots on CLNS Media).

Jerod Mayo says he still hasn’t made a decision about his Week 1 QB

Of course, this could be due to either Drake Maye hitting some benchmarks in his development or Jacoby Brissett looking worse than anticipated.

Three years ago, the Patriots gave Mac Jones the nod over Cam Newton to be the starter, and while the early returns were most definitely encouraging, we already know how things panned out in Foxboro.

The starting job is 100% up for grabs right now, and both quarterbacks will get one final audition in a preseason contest vs. the Washington Commanders to make a case for themselves.

Brissett has taken most of the first-team snaps, and Maye has barely gotten to play with the starting offensive line, so it would be rather shocking to see Maye being named the starter.

Still, all this might mean that he’s not as far behind in his development as initially thought.

So, even if he doesn’t get the nod to start in Week 1, there’s still a chance that he will end up suiting up and taking the field at some point in the season.
