New England Patriots fans got to see their No. 3 overall pick for the first time in Thursday’s 17-3 preseason-opening victory over the Carolina Panthers, and Drake Maye didn’t disappoint in his brief time on the field, going 2-for-3 for 19 yards passing.

Pats fans got a heavy dose of Bailey Zappe after Maye and Jacoby Brissett played just one series each to begin the game, and head coach Jerod Mayo revealed what the plan is for the second preseason game in terms of how much more fans can expect to see out of their prized rookie.

Patriots.com’s Evan Lazar posted on X that Mayo said he expects Maye to get more snaps in the next game against the Philadelphia Eagles and reiterated that the plan going into the Panthers game was to divvy up the QB snaps the way we all saw it unfold.

#Patriots HC Jerod Mayo said he “expects” rookie QB Drake Maye to get more snaps in the second preseason game vs. Philly. Reiterates that the plan going in last night was to divvy up the QB snaps that way.

Fellow rookie Joe Milton III shined late in the game by going 4-for-6 with 54 yards and a touchdown to go along with 22 rushing yards.

Maye looked comfortable despite playing in the pouring rain and showed that he could take snaps from under center while also displaying strong mechanics on his 7-step drops.

Brissett will head into the season as the starter, but in no way is he in the conversation for being a long-term solution.

He is a stopgap until Maye is ready, but there is no need to rush the rookie since he is only 21 and this team is a long way away from competing.

It will be fun to see more of Maye in the next game against Philly.
