New England Patriots fans barely got a chance to see their quarterback of the future in the preseason opener.

Drake Maye, who some thought was going to get the bulk of the snaps, barely played at all, with Bailey Zappe and Joe Milton III handling most of the work.

Now, HC Jerod Mayo has some great news for the fans, as he just confirmed that Maye and the starters would play ‘a lot more’ in the second preseason contest (via Mike Kadlick).

Jerod Mayo says the #Patriots starters, as well as QB Drake Maye, will play “a lot more” this week versus the Eagles.

As of now, the rookie out of North Carolina is listed as Jacoby Brissett’s backup.

Barring injury or a major turn of events, he’s not likely to start, even if he balls out in the preseason.

The Patriots are very high and confident in their first-round pick as the future of the franchise.

As such, they don’t want to risk hampering his development by sending him out there if he’s not ready yet.

Scouts raved about Maye’s intangibles and physical tools, but it was also more than evident that he needed to polish several aspects of his game before being ready to take the field.

There have been very positive reports about his work ethic, and he’s reportedly improved his footwork as well.

Even so, he still needs to hit several benchmarks before the Patriots’ coaching staff seems confident about having him out there.

For now, the fans will just have to settle for just getting a glimpse of his talents and watching him play in the preseason.
