The New England Patriots have themselves a quarterback battle in the middle of the preseason.
Veteran Jacoby Brissett and No. 3 overall draft pick Drake Maye are racing against each other for the starting gig.
In the latest preseason game for the Pats against the Philadelphia Eagles, Brissett was 3-for-7 for just 17 passing yards and an interception in the end zone.
Maye, on the other hand, was 6-for-11 for 47 yards and a short rushing touchdown in the 14-13 loss.
Head coach Jerod Mayo spoke to the New England media about Maye possibly starting down the road.
“When he’s ready to go and if he’s better than Jacoby, then he’ll play,” Mayo said, via Savage.

As far as statistics and decision-making go, Maye appears to be better than the veteran right now.
The rookie has a preseason passer rating of 69.3, while Brissett has an abysmal passer rating of 0.0.
There is no pressure on the Pats this season because they are rebuilding, so that is why Mayo might want to consider playing Maye right away.
The only way a young player can continue to get better is with actual playing experience, but the thing with Maye is that he might already be better than Brissett.
If Mayo wants to roll with the veteran to give Maye some more time to adjust to life in the NFL, that could make sense too.
But if the Pats want to have a bright future, their quarterback of the future needs to get as much playing time as possible to improve his game.
