During his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jerome Bettis, who is now long since retired and a Hall of Famer, was one of the best running backs in the NFL as he dominated every week with an elite and unique combination of size and speed, which gave him the nickname “The Bus”.
With Bettis being a three-time All-Pro and a Super Bowl champion to go along with six Pro Bowl selections, the Steelers legend knows what it takes to be successful in the NFL at the running back position, giving him a unique perspective on today’s best players coming out of the backfield in the league.
While on the golf course for the American Century Championship, where he’ll compete with some of the best athletes from the past and present, like Davante Adams, Josh Allen and Charles Woodson, he fielded some questions about today’s game in the NFL.
One interesting question that prompted a quick response from the Steelers icon was who he’d put together to form the ultimate running back.
Bettis chose to go with one running back rather than many, going with Philadelphia Eagles newcomer Saquon Barkley via NFL on CBS.
“Well, I don’t even have to build one. I got one. Saquon Barkley. Just package him,” Bettis said.

Barkley is an interesting choice as he’s no doubt among the elite running backs in the game today and will almost certainly help the Eagles have a bounce-back year after their meltdown during the second half of last season.
The veteran back chose not to re-sign with the New York Giants and instead inked a deal with their bitter rivals, which will make for some fireworks when the two teams go head-to-head next season in divisional play.
