After falling short in the NFL playoffs, the Dallas Cowboys decided it was time to shake things up, with star running back Ezekiel Elliott being the player sent packing as the team moves forward with Pro Bowler Tony Pollard.
Despite scoring 12 touchdowns during the 2022 NFL season, the Cowboys felt it was time to turn to Pollard as their lead back and release Elliott after seven seasons with the storied franchise.
With the 2023 NFL Draft officially in the books, Elliott still remains without a team and faces an uncertain future in the NFL.
Although the Cowboys parted ways with Elliott earlier in the offseason, Jerry Jones isn’t ruling out a reunion with the veteran running back via NFL.com.
“Ship has not sailed,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. “We haven’t made a decision. We’ve obviously drafted a running back, a little different style than Zeke, but it doesn’t change … For us, as far as our interest in Zeke, nothing we did today changes that.”

Fortunately for Elliott, he may be able to return to Dallas and continue his NFL career with the Cowboys, but Dallas doesn’t seem convinced to make the move, nor are they in a hurry to make it happen, especially after drafting running back Deuce Vaughn out of Kansas State University.
Vaughn isn’t Bijan Robinson and isn’t considered to be a player that will share the load in the Cowboys’ backfield with Pollard.
However, it’ll be interesting to see if Elliott ultimately stays in Dallas for another year or if another team with a need at running back is ready to sign him after the dust settles following the draft.
Although Elliott isn’t the same dominant player he used to be, the veteran back can still produce, as he proved last season with the Cowboys, which should at least draw some interest from teams this offseason.
