Jim Harbaugh is a football lifer.

He played throughout his childhood, in college at Michigan, and eventually for 14 years in the NFL before he became a coach immediately after his professional career ended.

Now, he’s the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers for the foreseeable future after time at San Diego, Stanford, the San Francisco 49ers, and then his alma mater.

Harbaugh told ESPN’s Pat McAfee this week that he knew football would be a part of his life forever when he was six years old.

“When I was in kindergarten we were taking a bus to school and I remember getting off the bus one school day and pretending I was a football player getting off the bus to go into the stadium,” Harbaugh said. “I think that’s when it hit me that this is definitely what I’m going to do. I’m going to play as long I can, then I’m going to coach.”

Football was part of Harbaugh’s life during his childhood because his father, Jack Harbaugh, coached in college.

So it’s not all that surprising that both Harbaugh brothers turned into football coaches themselves, with Jim now in Los Angeles and John Harbaugh with the Baltimore Ravens.

Harbaugh has already been a successful college coach after he led the Wolverines to the national championship in 2023, but a Super Bowl eluded him when he was with the 49ers.

He’ll get another opportunity to bring home a Lombardi Trophy with the Chargers, although it remains to be seen how long that will take him.
