For a couple of years, Victor Wembanyama was penciled in as the clear-cut and consensus No. 1 pick in the past NBA Draft.
Even with elite talents like Scoot Henderson and Brandon Miller, the Frenchman stood in a tier of his own throughout the course of the entire process.
There were some obvious concerns about his size and lack of muscle, and some thought he wasn’t going to be durable.
Fast forward to today, and he’s played most of the games this season and has had one of the most impressive rookie campaigns this game has ever seen.
Talking on his Old Man and Three Podcast, JJ Redick claimed that as impressive as Wembanyama is as a basketball player, what he has in his heart and his mind and his work ethic are what make him stand out from the rest of the pack (via ClutchPoints).
“I’ve never met a 19-year-old that was wired that way at that age. [Victor Wembanyama is] incredible… I love that you differentiate between just the size and the skill. But what he has in his heart and mind,” Redick said.

Wembanyama has shown an ability and desire to be coached and constantly get better, and he’s wired like the ultimate competitor, up to the point where he was visually disgruntled when he didn’t win the Skills Competition at the All-Star weekend.
Also, the fact that he chose to keep playing in France despite already having the No. 1 pick secured for months also spoke volumes about his love and feel for the game and his desire to compete and be great.
Barring injuries, it shouldn’t take long before he’s the undisputed best player on Earth.
