As the new head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, JJ Redick has a lot of work to do to get this team to the next level after falling flat in the playoffs over the last few years, and one of the biggest and most challenging tasks will be developing second-round pick Bronny James into a consistent contributor.
Bronny has shot a paltry 6-for-26 in Summer League through three games so far, but Redick doesn’t seem worried and recently revealed what he wants Bronny to focus on moving forward.
Redick recently spoke with Justin Termine of SiriusXM NBA Radio and mentioned Oklahoma City Thunder guard Lu Dort as a good blueprint for Bronny, saying “[Lu Dort’s] impact – you can’t get into your offense sometimes. The shot clock winds down because of his ball pressure…Bronny eventually will be that guy.”

Focusing on defense early on is a more controllable goal for Bronny until his offense develops, and there are few better examples to emulate than Dort, who is one of the best in the league.
Dort is also 6’4″ and 220 pounds with a 6’9″ wingspan, but Bronny also has an impressive 6’7″ wingspan despite being just 6’1″ so while he can’t be expected to be Lu Dort tomorrow, there’s no reason he can’t bring Dort’s intensity to the court every night.
To be honest, every player should try to be Lu Dort if they aren’t fully developed offensively.
It’s great to see Redick already has a plan for Bronny, and having him rely on defense early on is an ideal way to ease him into his role in the NBA.
