Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla just won his first championship and should be spending his time celebrating and planning for a long, laid-back summer.
Instead, he is planning for surgery.
Mazzulla shocked a lot of people when he revealed that he had suffered a torn meniscus a few months ago and would need surgery in the offseason.
Speaking with the hosts of “Pardon My Take,” via Jake Issenberg, Mazzulla talked about his injury.
He said that he was pushing himself too hard earlier in the season after a March loss to the Atlanta Hawks.
Since then, he has had to fight through the pain to keep his team on track to win the Finals.
Now that it’s done, he can get it repaired as soon as possible.

Mazzulla admitted that the injury was painful and required medical care but he also talked about how it helped him in the closing months of the season.
He mentioned that the injury forced him to physically slow down, which allowed him to focus more and keep his head in the game.
Instead of looking at the injury as a problem, he viewed it as a blessing.
Mazzulla now has plenty of time to get it fixed and will be back and ready to coach the Celtics in the fall.
This Finals win was massive for Mazzulla, who became the youngest coach since Bill Russell to claim an NBA championship at just 35 years old.
He has overcome a lot of odds during his tenure as Boston’s head coach, and now he will overcome this physical ailment and get back to work in 2024–25.
