As one of the calmest and coolest characters in the NBA, Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla carries himself and talks like someone who has been coaching professionally for decades.
Even though Mazzulla was thrust into a pressure-filled situation after the Celtics parted ways with controversial head coach Ime Udoka, who ultimately took the head coaching job with the Houston Rockets, he has been extremely poised and doesn’t seem to get rattled no matter the situation.
On Thursday, Mazzulla will be coaching in the NBA Finals for the first time, with the Celtics playing host to the visiting Dallas Mavericks at TD Garden in Boston for Game 1, followed by Game 2 on their home floor on Sunday before the series shifts to Texas for Game 3 and Game 4.
Ahead of the first game of the series, Mazzulla asked about coaching on the biggest stage in the NBA with a title on the line, which would be an NBA record 18 if Boston comes out on top via Justin Turpin of WEEI.
“Unless they changed the lightbulbs in the arena, they won’t be any brighter than they were last series,” Mazzulla said.

Mazzulla is clearly not impacted by the bright lights of the occasion or the fact that all the pressure in this seven-game series will be on the Celtics, who are the favorites and expected to come out on top.
It’ll be interesting to see if this stance changes if the Celtics get down in the series and fail to live up to expectations.
