When Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles on the New York Jets‘ first offensive series of this season, it meant the team was forced to go on with Zach Wilson at quarterback once again.

The No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft hasn’t amounted to much, if anything, so far in his pro career, and he struggled mightily in his first two starts this year, leading Jets legend Joe Namath to douse him with criticism.

But Wilson did well in New York’s Week 4 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, completing 28 of 39 pass attempts and throwing two touchdown passes against zero interceptions.

Per theScore, Namath did an about-face on his opinion of Wilson following Sunday’s bounce-back performance.

After Rodgers’ injury, there was immediate speculation the Jets would look to bring in a more experienced player to start under center, and there was even one rumor that Tom Brady may come out of retirement to play for them.

But they have stuck with Wilson, at least for now.

It is very understandable that Namath felt the way he recently felt about Wilson, since he was the Jets’ last true franchise quarterback some 50-plus years ago.

The franchise hasn’t won it all since he led it to victory in Super Bowl III, and it hasn’t even made the playoffs since the 2010 season.

Other than the quarterback position, New York does have plenty of talent on both sides of the football, but their defense hasn’t lived up to its potential, and without a competent QB, its offense is grounded.
