Philadelphia 76ers superstar and former MVP Joel Embiid has had a rocky run in The Olympics so far from getting benched to getting violently booed by the French crowd for choosing not to play for the host country, to dominating Serbia en route to leading Team USA to the gold medal game on Saturday against France, of all teams.

He has received plenty of criticism for choosing to play for Team USA in the first place over France, where he has citizenship, and his native Cameroon, who he said didn’t believe had a chance to make the Olympics anyway, but his recent comments indicate this could be his first and last run with Team USA.

Bleacher Report shared a graphic including Embiid’s thoughts on the 2028 Olympics, and Embiid said “It might not be with Team USA, it might be with Cameroon.”

Winning a gold medal to cap off his 2024 run would make this an easier decision for Embiid, who will be 34 during the 2028 Olympics and likely at the tail end of his prime.

Given his size and the amount of injuries he has had to endure, it’s likely that 2028 could be his last Olympics, so winning his gold medal in 2024 and leading his native Cameroon to Los Angeles for the 2028 Games would be a fun story arc for his international career.

Other potential members of the Cameroon team would include Indiana Pacers star Pascal Siakam, Toronto Raptors center Christian Koloko, and New Orleans Pelicans rookie Yves Missi, who was just taken 21st in the draft.
