After a six-yard touchdown run by Christian McCaffrey gave the San Francisco 49ers a 24-21 lead, quarterback Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers had about a minute left in the fourth quarter to put together a scoring drive that would, at the very least, tie the game at 24 points apiece.

After gaining a little more than 10 yards on their first three plays of the drive, the Packers lined up for 1st-and-10 from their own 36-yard line with 52 seconds left in regulation.

Love took the snap, scrambled to his right, and as he got closer to the sideline, he decided to throw the football across his body and into the middle of the field toward Green Bay receiver Christian Watson.

Unfortunately for the young quarterback, his pass was intercepted by 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw, and the Packers’ 2023 season came to an end.

After the loss, Love commented on his game-sealing interception (via ProFootballTalk on Twitter).

He called the game-sealing interception a ‘mortal sin.’

“Looking back on it, yeah, throw it away. I don’t know if I had an opportunity to be able to run, maybe get out of bounds, but, you know, force it across the middle late, which is a mortal sin, and it cost us,” Love said.

Not throwing across the body is something that quarterbacks are taught from a very young age, so it was surprising to see Love decide to do this at such a crucial part of the game on Saturday.

But the Packers signal-caller is young, and he’s still learning, but overall, he should be satisfied with how he performed during his first-full season as Green Bay’s starting quarterback.

The 2023 campaign obviously didn’t end the way Love and his Packers teammates wanted it to, but now they will have plenty of motivation to return to the playoffs next season.
