On Thursday afternoon, Jose Ramirez of the Cleveland Guardians made one of the most thrilling plays in baseball: he stole home plate.

Not only did he steal home, but he did it in extra innings and to give his team the advantage.

He was initially called out on the play by the home plate umpire, but upon review, they reverted the decision and he was deemed safe.

According to the league’s official Twitter account, Ramirez became just the eighth player to successfully steal home plate in extra innings.

Unfortunately for the Guardians, they could not win the game.

J-Ram’s steal meant that the Guardians were headed to the bottom of the tenth frame with a 3-2 lead.

The Kansas City Royals, however, would flip the score again against Emmanuel Clase and take the win at Kauffman Stadium.

With Kyle Isbel placed at second base per rule, Nicky Lopez singled and sent him to third.

After Clase struck out Drew Waters, pinch-hitter Freddy Fermin doubled to left field and brought home the two winning runs.

It’s rather unfortunate that Ramirez’s play was “lost”, but it’s another cool reminder about the incredible things he can do on a baseball field.

He has hit .298/.367/.525 with 13 home runs, nine stolen bases, 50 runs, and 52 RBI: there, you have contact, on-base ability, power, and speed, and that doesn’t even account for his good defense.

Ramirez is one of the most valuable players in the American League and he shows it year after year.

He might not be particularly flashy, but he gets the job done and that’s all that matters.
