There’s been a worrisome trend going on in the National Football League recently.
Star players seem to be so envious of their peers’ contracts that they don’t want to honor the deals they initially signed.
It’s not about getting their fair market value or even generational wealth anymore; it’s all about nurturing their egos and making sure to be the highest-paid player at their position.
Fortunately for the Buffalo Bills, that doesn’t seem to be the case with Josh Allen.
Allen signed a $258 million contract extension in 2021, which gave him the second-largest annual salary in the league at the time.
Now, with all quarterbacks — even those who might not be at his level — getting record-breaking contracts, Allen has fallen all the way to No. 13.
Even so, when asked about that, he admitted to being content with the deal he signed at the moment (via WIVB):
That makes perfect sense.
Josh Allen is making a whopping $43 million per year, and he’s still got $95 million coming his way, so it’s not like he’s scrambling to make ends meet.
On the flip side, we’re seeing players like Ja’Marr Chase, who still have two years left on their contracts, holding out from their teams out of jealousy.
Just because Justin Jefferson got a massive deal doesn’t mean Chase should also get one right away, but players today seem to be more about making more money than their colleagues than actually winning football games.
The Bills got themselves in a tough spot when they signed Allen to that extension, but his deal is reasonable now, and that cycle will go on until the league does something about it.
