The San Francisco 49ers have decided that Brook Purdy is the face of this storied NFL franchise moving forward, as he has proven that he’s the real deal and someone that head coach Kyle Shanahan can get behind.
Not only is Purdy the starting quarterback for the foreseeable future, but the team also decided to make veteran newcomer Sam Darnold his backup, which put Trey Lance in the third spot on the depth chart.
Obviously, that’s not where a former first-round pick wants to be, especially considering the fact he had expectations of competing for the starting gig coming into training camp.
As a result, Lance asked to be traded and got his wish, with the 49ers agreeing to a deal with the Dallas Cowboys, in which San Francisco takes a significant loss as they only got a fourth-round pick in return after giving up so much to trade up to grab him in the draft a few years ago.
Joy Taylor of FS1 believes that the 49ers mishandled the Lance situation in San Francisco from the start, via “Speak” on FS1.

Taylor isn’t wrong, as the 49ers look a little foolish giving Lance away for one pick when they sacrificed four to get him not all that long ago.
However, the franchise did try to give him his time to shine last season by making him the Week 1 starter, and that resulted in a season-ending foot injury that basically ended his stint with the team due to Purdy’s eventual emergence after Jimmy Garoppolo went down.
So even though this does seem like a big blunder for the 49ers, it was more a matter of bad timing, as they still ended up with a franchise quarterback who appears to be much better than Lance.
