Saturday night’s game between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox had a little bit of everything except for good pitching as the two teams went back and forth making baserunning gaffes, fielding errors, and delivering one clutch hit after another before the Yankees finally capped things off with three runs in the 10th inning to take home an 11-8 victory to even the series.

One play that stood out was Juan Soto’s big mistake in the top of the 8th inning that could have cost his team the game had it not rallied once again in the 9th inning to tie it up.

With one out in the top of the 8th and runners on first and second, Aaron Judge ripped a double into the gap in left-center field that scored Alex Verdugo from second, while Soto tried to score from first and ran through a stop sign from the third base coach only to be gunned down at the plate with ease by shortstop Ceddanne Rafaela’s relay throw from Jarren Duran in center.

The play preserved an 8-7 lead for the Sox that was later relinquished on Trent Grisham’s clutch two-out RBI double off Kenley Jansen in the 9th inning, so Soto’s teammates wound up picking him up.

Rafaela made a similar gaffe in the second inning when he was thrown out at third with one out while standing off the base and having a conversation with the third base coach.

This wasn’t the best game to be a third-base coach.
