Marcus Stroman has helped provide a little bit of stability in the starting rotation for the Chicago Cubs this season.

The veteran right-hander is 9-6 with an ERA of 2.76 through his first 18 starts in 2023.

But with the Cubs under the .500 mark, it’s anybody’s guess as to what they will do at the trade deadline.

Stroman joined the Cubs on a three-year deal prior to the 2022 season, but can opt out of his deal this coming offseason and return to the free agent market.

On Saturday, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports provided the latest news about where things stand with Stroman and the North Siders.

Rosenthal noted that Stroman may potentially opt out of the final year of his contract with Chicago.

He also took note of the fact that Stroman has expressed a desire to remain with the Cubs and hopes to sign an extension soon.

However, the Cubs do not appear to have any plans in extending him prior to the trade deadline.

The Cubs want to see if they remain in postseason contention before they decide what to do with the 32-year-old, and Rosenthal notes that their budget for next season depends on how they finish the 2023 season.

Rosenthal revealed that Stroman understands where the Cubs are coming from on this issue, and that he even went as far as to say that no matter what happens in the upcoming months, he would love to have a chance to re-sign with the Cubs this winter as a free agent.
