After winning 101 games last season and securing a Wild Card spot, the New York Mets have fallen on hard times in 2023.

The team was expected to be a clear World Series contender after signing Justin Verlander to strengthen their rotation.

Not even a year later, Verlander is back with the Houston Astros and the Mets are on pace for an ugly finish.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, it even got to the point where the Mets were actually considering trading first baseman and slugger Pete Alonso.

Rosenthal confirmed this report on Twitter and cast some doubt over Alonso’s future with the Mets.

This is certainly a surprising development.

However, given Max Scherzer’s comments about the Mets not planning on being in postseason contention again for a few years, it’s certainly plausible to think that Alonso could have been the center of trade discussions.

Rosenthal notes that the Milwaukee Brewers were the team that the Mets were discussing a potential Alonso trade with.

Alonso would have given the Brewers an extra power bat along with Mark Canha and it could have even made them the clear favorite to win the NL Central down the stretch.

For now, Alonso remains in New York as one of the key pieces on the Mets roster.

But it’s interesting to note that the team was in talks to potentially trade him, and it begs the question of whether or not he’ll remain with the team past this season.

Trading Alonso would almost certainly signal a rebuild in New York.
