The Philadelphia Phillies, the New York Yankees, and the Cleveland Guardians are vying for the “best team in MLB so far” label, at least as of Tuesday afternoon.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been very good, as you would think of a team that just spent more than a billion dollars to strengthen its roster.

But they haven’t been quite as good as those three aforementioned squads and have dropped five games in a row.

Their 33-22 record is still good enough to lead the NL West with a five-game cushion, but they still have work to do before catching up to the rest of the elite.

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal had some words for the Dodgers.

“The Dodgers are discovering that $1.4 billion cannot buy you a full 26-man roster, @Ken_Rosenthal writes. Even after their lucrative offseason, adjustments still will be necessary in L.A.’s quest for a World Series title,” The Athletic tweeted.

While this might be a bit of an overreaction from a losing streak (those will happen to every team, including the best ones, over a 162-game season), there is some truth in the overall premise: money will not always buy success.

It might be of great help, but building a roster is more complex and it includes other dynamics and factors.

It’s also fair to say injuries have affected the team, but this is true for every organization.

In the end, the Dodgers will probably be fine: in any case, it’s not regular-season success that they are aiming for.

They are looking to have their best players healthy and in good form come October.

That’s when the real test will take place.
