The New York Mets recently completed a fire sale at the trade deadline.

They traded away several key pieces such as Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, David Robertson, Tommy Pham. and Mark Canha.

Now it appears that New York is taking a step back from contention and looking to rebuild for the future.

This was something Scherzer had confirmed during his introductory press conference with the Texas Rangers.

On the MLB podcast “Fair Territory,” Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic appeared and sounded off on the fire sale, discussing the implications of what took place and how it will impact the Mets.

Rosenthal discussed the comments made by Scherzer about why he ultimately waived his no-trade clause to join the Rangers, when he revealed that GM Billy Eppler and owner Steve Cohen laid out the plan to take some steps backwards.

Rosenthal noted that the Mets haven’t exactly referred to what they did at the trade deadline as a fire sale and that they are still trying to sell to their fans that they want to contend.

However, while the Mets may not consider it as such, it certainly seemed as if they were attempting a fire sale at the deadline.

Furthermore, Rosenthal says that because of that, it’s clear that the Mets do not intend to compete for a spot in the postseason in 2024.

The Mets won 101 games last year and earned a Wild Card spot, but failed to advance past the first round.

Now, matters are worse as the Mets are falling out of contention and have already traded some key players.
