After nearly two months of constant speculation, the Los Angeles Lakers finally made the move everyone thought they would make after they parted ways with head coach Darvin Ham after two seasons with the team.
On Thursday, the Lakers put the rumors to an end as they agreed to a four-year deal with former player and ESPN broadcaster JJ Redick to be Ham’s successor in Los Angeles, where he’ll reportedly be paid nearly $8 million per season.
With the dust finally settling on the coaching search for the Lakers, the team can now focus on other things that need to be done in the coming weeks, like filling out Redick’s coaching staff, who they’ll take in the 2024 NBA Draft, and what players they’ll bring in during NBA free agency.
Although the Lakers brass will be busy moving forward, ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins believes that they’ll have another problem, with superstar Anthony Davis potentially asking for a trade in the near future via NBA Central.
“If JJ Redick is not thriving and Anthony Davis is not playing at an elite level, and he’s not happy, I wouldn’t be surprised if he wants out of LA. I’m gonna give it till All-Star break,” Perkins said.

With the odds not in Redick’s favor to be a success in his first coaching gig in the NBA, Davis asking out before the NBA trade deadline is a possible scenario, as he is still arguably in the prime of his career and doesn’t want to go through another rough experience with an inexperienced head coach.
Only time will tell how things pan out in Los Angeles as they embark on a new era with Redick at the helm.
