The Denver Nuggets will enter the season as reigning NBA champions, and as most people know by now, going back-to-back is one of the toughest things any team could strive for.
For starters, every other team in the league is going at you, and they plan their offseason accordingly.
Also, the Nuggets lost a key depth piece in Bruce Brown, and while most of their championship core is still locked and loaded, they might not be fresh.
Recently, former NBA champion Kendrick Perkins claimed that the Nuggets shouldn’t be considered the clear-cut favorites to go the distance again next season, via ESPN.
He reminded everyone of when the Milwaukee Bucks won the ring and then Jrue Holiday and Khris Middleton didn’t have time to rest because of their commitment to Team USA, adding that they came back exhausted.
More than that, he talked about the new-look Phoenix Suns, an up-and-coming team like the Sacramento Kings, and the Los Angeles Lakers now having a full training camp to develop chemistry ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Perkins might have a valid point right there, as Jamal Murray recently announced he was going to skip the upcoming FIBA World Cup to heal and restore his body for the season.
The Nuggets and Miami Heat obviously played more games than anybody in the league, and staying healthy and fresh could take a team a long way.
The NBA season is a long grind, and not many teams have been able to win consecutive titles for a reason.
