Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss made some interesting comments recently when asked whether the team would retire LeBron James’ jersey, even though he has not been with the team that long and has won only one title during his stint in Los Angeles thus far.
Buss admitted that he fits the requirements of having a jersey retired by the storied franchise, as he will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer and added a championship banner to the rafters of Crypto.com Arena.
With James set to get his jersey retired by the team when the time comes after his playing career is over, the next question is whether he’ll get a statue outside of Crypto.com Arena to join the likes of other Lakers legends, like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jerry West, Magic Johnson, Elgin Baylor, and Shaquille O’Neal.
Many fans of the 17-time NBA champions don’t think James has done enough to get that honor from the team, but ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins thinks otherwise, as he points out two reasons why he should get one, via NBA on ESPN.

Perkins believes that winning a championship in the NBA bubble in 2020 and passing Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer was enough to get him a statue.
Although those are some impressive feats, it remains to be seen whether Buss and company feel that it is worthy of having a statue along with a jersey retirement.
The late, great Kobe Bryant is the next in line for a statue, which is rumored to happen in August of next year.
