The first five games of the 2023-24 NBA season have been anything but pretty for the Los Angeles Lakers, with the team playing in some hard-fought battles in each game thus far, outside of the blowout in the season opener to the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets.
Right out of the gate against the Nuggets, the Lakers wanted to mix things up with LeBron James playing under a minutes restriction of about 30 minutes.
Although Darvin Ham and company stuck to that restriction in the first game of the season, the same can’t be said for the last four games, with the superstar forward logging a lot of minutes.
However, those minutes were needed from James in order for the team to be sitting at 3-2 thus far, and former NBA player Kendrick Perkins thinks he knows why the four-time NBA champion is going so hard right now, via NBA on ESPN.
“He’s playing with a passion, a purpose and a reason, which is Bronny James.”

With Bronny James suffering a cardiac arrest recently during a practice session with USC, the Lakers superstar had his family life rocked to its core, as it was uncertain whether his son would be able to live out his dream of playing in the NBA.
Fortunately, Bronny is expected to make a full recovery, and as Perkins said, LeBron has dedicated this season to him, so he’s going all out for his son even as he’s set to turn 39 in December.
The real question is whether this is truly sustainable, as LeBron hasn’t been able to stay healthy throughout his entire time with the Lakers thus far, and he’s only getting older, so it’ll be interesting to see how things pan out in Los Angeles.
