Kristaps Porzingis might be hugely beneficial and consequential to the Boston Celtics in the new season.
But he also might end up letting them down.
If Porzingis is injured again and misses games, the Celtics will have a major hole in their frontcourt.
Sadly, the Latvian star is going to sit out of the FIBA World Cup this summer because of a lingering plantar fasciitis issue in his foot.
This is causing many, including Kendrick Perkins, to be concerned.
“Until I see him on the floor, I’m still going to have these same concerns that everybody’s been having since he was drafted by the New York Knicks,” Perkins said on ESPN.
“I need to see Porzingis in those pressure moments. I need to see if his body is going to hold up through a long season and through a postseason where they’re trying to make a championship run,” Perkins also said.
Perkins said that Porzingis should be included in conversations about frequently injured players like Kawhi Leonard and Anthony Davis.
This should be a big warning flag to Boston’s front office and its fans, Perkins suggests.
Everyone can agree that the big man has plenty of great things to offer.
He is coming off a strong season with an average of 23.2 points and 8.4 rebounds.
He was also shooting at 49.8% during his final year with the Washington Wizards.
But the injuries in Porzginis’ past and present raise alarms for some who fear that he will have the same problems in Boston.
The team has given up a lot to get Porzingis, including Marcus Smart as part of the three-team trade.
And since they have been doing so well lately, their chances of a very long season are high.
Can Porzingis remain healthy during it all?
If not, how do the Celtics carry on without such an impactful and important part of their plans?
