Just months ago, some NBA fans and analysts speculated about LeBron James’ future.
Some thought it was just a matter of time before he forced his way out of town to pursue another championship somewhere else.
However, that never seemed to make much sense.
So, now that he’s signed a contract decision to stay in Southern California for a little longer, that narrative might be water under the bridge.
With that in mind, former NBA champion Kenny Smith felt comfortable predicting that James wouldn’t leave the Lakers and would finish his career there (Via Responsible Gambling).
Truth be told, that just makes sense.
For starters, a player of his caliber shouldn’t pursue that many destinations and three teams are more than enough.
His family is established in Los Angeles, and his business operations are also headquartered there.
The team has given him major input in decision-making, up to the point where he seems to have more power than GM Rob Pelinka, so it makes no sense to give up on that much leverage.
They also hired his friend and business partner, JJ Redick, to be his next coach.
And if it wasn’t enough, they went the extra mile to draft his older son, Bronny, who averaged single digits in college and was never a highly-touted prospect in high school.
The Lakers have done everythng in their power to keep James there until he retires, and while that might not translate into winning more championships, at least they’ll sell plenty of tickets.
