The Phoenix Suns look more and more like a failed experiment right now.
There were some big and legitimate concerns about this team entering the season, and they only got bigger as the campaign went by.
It seemed like they had found the depth they needed in free agency, rounding up the roster with switchable defenders and capable shooters.
Then again, their lack of a traditional point guard was a major concern, as well as their stars’ injury-proneness, and both of those things hampered their ability to be at their best all year long.
They’re now facing elimination after falling 0-3 to the red-hot Minnesota Timberwolves, and Kevin Durant’s latest statement on leadership — or lack thereof — could explain why they’re going out like this.
When asked about who was the leader of the team, Durant pointed at Frank Vogel, adding that they all speak up on the court, but the coach was ultimately the leader (via Gerald Bourguet).
Who’s the Suns leader right now?

Suns don’t have a floor leader out there?

Of course, it’s nice to see that there’s a well-defined chain of command and that they have plenty of respect for coach Vogel, but all championship teams need someone who steps up and leads the way on the floor as well.
Chris Paul was obviously far from his prime and making a lot of money, but that’s what he brought to the table in Phoenix, and the team made it to the NBA Finals with him on the floor.
Bradley Beal has once again been one of the most overpaid players in the Association, missing a lot of games, and having underwhelming games and averages there.
Durant and Devin Booker haven’t exactly stepped up as vocal leaders either, and it’s hard to envision them going any further with this kind of roster.
Unfortunately for them, they might have no choice going forward.
