Has the time come for the Los Angeles Lakers to make one of their biggest moves ever?
On the latest episode of “KG Certified,” Kevin Garnett suggested that the Lakers’ biggest asset is LeBron James and that if they want to focus on the future, they should contemplate saying goodbye to him.
He said that it’s not every day an NBA team has a big man like Anthony Davis, along with fearless players like Austin Reaves and D’Angelo Russell.
Yet, they remain the tenth seed in the Western Conference, even with James and all of those players.
Does that mean they should think about ending the James era?
The chances of that happening are beyond slim.
The Lakers are deeply committed to James and even if they were the worst team in the league, they would likely cling to him as long as possible.
In fact, the only way that James would leave the Lakers would be if he wished to do so.
That being said, Garnett does make a fair point: the team needs to put even more emphasis on the future.
There are multiple impressive stars on the roster beyond James but they need more power.
Sometime in the next few years, James will hang up his jersey and the Lakers will be without the four-time champion.
What will be their path ahead after that?
Are they truly laying the groundwork for the next generation of the franchise?
It’ll be interesting to see what the Lakers do this summer after the challenging season they have had.
Their first order of business will be signing James to a new contract and then they will have to see if they can afford any other change to improve the roster.
Despite what Garnett says, the Lakers aren’t going to make any moves with James but they might make some around him.
