The Minnesota Vikings’ 2023 NFL season was a rollercoaster as the team got off to a slow start, picked things up midway, and then faltered down the stretch.

The biggest reason why the Vikings slipped out of playoff contention was the devastating injury to Kirk Cousins.

Cousins suffered an Achilles tear that forced him to miss the remainder of the regular season and Minnesota’s offense predictably struggled.

While not often brought up in the conversation for best quarterbacks in the league, Cousins is certainly above average as he can deliver passes on time and make difficult throws under pressure.

Despite the severity of his injury, Cousins is still expected to be one of the hottest names during free agency.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell recently spoke about Cousins and acknowledged the quarterback was one of the main reasons he took the job via the team’s official Twitter account.

“Kirk was a huge reason why I thought so highly, amongst a lot of things, about the Minnesota Vikings opportunity,” O’Connell said.

O’Connell also mentioned that his family and Cousins’ family are close, a sign that he would like to see his quarterback in Minnesota next season.

The two got to know each other during the 2017 NFL season when they were with the Washington Commanders, though it remains to be seen if they’ll have another season together.

Minnesota could opt to draft Cousins’ successor in the 2024 NFL Draft, though perhaps a return to the team on a friendly deal could be in the cards as well.
