The quarterback situation in Minnesota might be one to pay attention to as the NFL heads into training camp.
The Vikings drafted Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy with the No. 10 overall draft pick in April with veteran Sam Darnold also on the roster.
With there being no clear-cut answer on who will start Week 1, head coach Kevin O’Connell recently spoke to the Minneapolis media about how the position looks right now.
“I have no preconceived preset depth chart in my mind…Sam had a great Spring. J.J. came in here after being drafted and had a really productive Spring as well…I want a really competitive situation. Sam will be taking the majority of his reps with that first group, but I think you’ll see J.J. maybe get some as well,” O’Connell said.

As things stand right now, it feels as if Darnold could be the leader in the clubhouse because of his experience and ability to grasp Minnesota’s offense so far.
Remember, the former first-round pick has 56 career starts and has started for three different teams.
Despite not having a ton of winning success, that experience is something that is very valuable to any head coach, especially one as offensive-minded as O’Connell.
McCarthy, who is coming off of a national championship at Michigan, has experience winning in the biggest and brightest moments.
If he can flash his potential and ability to be successful in O’Connell’s offense, perhaps he could gain some more starting reps down the road.
For now, it feels like it is Darnold’s job to lose.
