The Atlanta Falcons have been one of the biggest storylines throughout the NFL offseason.
They made a massive move by landing Kirk Cousins in free agency, seemingly bolstering this team into a playoff contender.
After drafting offensive skill-position players in the first round in the past few years, Cousins is surrounded by former blue-chip prospects who are ready to turn their potential into tangible NFL success.
While this should still be the case in 2024 if he is healthy, the Falcons made a surprising move on draft night that could sour Cousins’ opinion of his new team.
The Falcons stayed put at pick No. 8, selecting Michael Penix Jr., which sent the NFL world into a spiral.
After seeing this pick happen, Mike Garafolo shared a photo of comments from Cousins’ agent, Mike McCartney.
According to Garafolo, McCartney said, “Yes, it was a big surprise. We had no idea this was coming. The truth is the whole league had no idea this was coming.”

McCartney’s comments indicate that not only did he and Cousins not anticipate this, but nobody in the NFL predicted the Falcons drafting Penix as early as they did.
What this means for Cousins and his future as the team’s starter, remains to be seen.
He did sign a four-year, $180 million contract with the team, which makes this move all the more surprising.
One rationale is that the Falcons might want to follow the Green Bay Packers’ approach with Jordan Love and Aaron Rodgers.
Love sat for a few years behind Rodgers and learned the ropes of the NFL and the Green Bay offense, and when Rodgers moved on, Love was ready.
Will the Falcons adopt the same approach with Penix and Cousins?
