The New York Knicks have emerged in the past several months as legitimate championship contenders, and it has been a breath of fresh air for their fans.

The Knicks had been NBA laughingstocks for the past two decades, but they now seem to have a real shot at winning it all this coming season as they have gotten even stronger this summer.

They traded for high-level two-way wing Mikal Bridges while also getting Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby to agree to contract extensions, and now, they have retained one of their key rotation players.

Big man Precious Achiuwa has reportedly agreed to a one-year contract worth $6 million to remain with New York, per Adrian Wojnarowski.

Achiuwa was acquired by New York from the Toronto Raptors in the same trade that brought in Anunoby midway through the 2023-24 season, and though he didn’t have the same impact as Anunoby, he did contribute.

In 49 regular-season games with the Knicks, Achiuwa averaged 7.6 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocked shots per game in 24.2 minutes per contest, making 18 starts.

At 6-foot-8 and 243 pounds, his best position is power forward, but he also played a considerable amount of time at center.

Right now, if the Knicks have a roster deficiency, it would be at center, with injury-prone Mitchell Robinson the only true 5 currently on their roster.

Isaiah Hartenstein, who played a key role in their playoff run a few months ago, left to join the Oklahoma City Thunder in free agency, and New York will miss his rebounding and defense.
