The Boston Celtics officially have a new Big 3, with Kristaps Porzingis coming to town and adding to the dynamic duo of stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

The move to trade for Porzingis was a surprising one, to say the least, with the Celtics clearly a team that needed to upgrade its roster, but bringing in an injury-prone veteran and getting worse on defense is a strange way to do it.

There’s no question the Celtics will be better offensively if Porzingis can stay healthy, as he brings another dynamic to the team as a seven-footer who can stretch the floor.

However, defense, which wasn’t an issue with Marcus Smart and Grant Williams on the squad, will likely become one.

Regardless of how things might play out in Boston, the team has announced the completion of Porzingis’ contract extension and the trade that sent Williams to the Dallas Mavericks, according to Jared Weiss of The Athletic.

The Celtics announced they have completed the 2-year, $60 million extension with Kristaps Porzingis today now that the Grant Williams sign-and-trade to the Mavs is complete. Porzingis’ total deal is now ~$96 million over the next 3 seasons.

With the Celtics committing to Porzingis on a new lucrative deal over the next three years, it’ll be interesting to see the team’s next move, with Brown expected to be the next big-name player in Boston signed to a contract extension.

Brown is now eligible to sign a supermax contract extension due to making an All-NBA team this past season, but he has yet to put pen to paper, even though the team has made it clear that they fully intend to take care of him.

Once the team signs Brown to the extension, the speculation can end regarding his future with the team, with the sole focus being to get this new Big 3 to work and become the best trio in the league.
