Kyle Lowry recently re-signed with the Philadelphia 76ers on a one-year deal to remain in the city where he was born and also where he went to college at Villanova.
Another high-profile team that employs seemingly half of all Villanova alumni had a chance to make a run at Lowry in free agency, but according to Lowry’s recent telling statement, that situation was never a reality.
The New York Knicks have locked up former Villanova stars Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, Donte DiVincenzo, and Mikal Bridges for years to come and when asked about potentially joining his fellow alums with the Knicks this offseason during a recent golf outing, Lowry said “they didn’t want me.”

The four Villanova players on the Knicks all led the Wildcats to a National Championship in 2016, and besides Hart, the other three led the team to a second title in 2018.
Lowry is now 38 years old and will be looking to win his second NBA championship this upcoming season alongside former MVP Joel Embiid, rising superstar Tyrese Maxey, and new superstar Paul George.
The Knicks added to their already deep crop of former Nova guys by trading for Bridges this offseason, but haven’t been active in free agency due to their cap situation, so signing Lowry was never likely on the table.
Philly also used its first-round pick on point guard Jared McCain out of Duke, and it’ll be nice to have Lowry around to help the rookie get comfortable.
If this is Lowry’s last season, there is no better way to go out than potentially winning his second NBA title in the city where it all began for him.
