San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan may only be 44 years old, but he’s already widely considered to be one of the elite head coaches in the NFL with a potentially bright future ahead if he can continue to have his team be perennial title contenders in the NFC.

Although Shanahan is as young as he is, he isn’t without big-game experience, as he’s already been in two Super Bowls and has lost both times.

Unfortunately for Shanahan, he was the offensive coordinator under Dan Quinn when the Atlanta Falcons went the distance to take on Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl when Bill Belichick’s squad pulled off a historic comeback to win it all.

A few years later, after taking the job as the new head coach of the 49ers, Shanahan was back in the Super Bowl but got the same result, losing to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

On Sunday, Shanahan has a chance at redemption against the Chiefs but admits that those two losses in the Super Bowl broke his heart, via ProFootballTalk.

“I’ve been able to coach in two Super Bowls and to lose either of them, both of them are heartbreaking,” Shanahan said. “It’s all about getting back there again, and that’s what I’m excited about today.”

Although the Chiefs are not a team to be underestimated, especially after what they did against the top-seeded Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game, the 49ers are the slight favorites to win on Sunday.

This would be a giant leap forward for Shanahan if he can finally get over the hump while taking down the Chiefs, who have been the team of the last decade or so in the NFL.
