The Dallas Mavericks risked a lot when they traded for Kyrie Irving.
Not only were they giving away a future first-round pick and most of their depth, but they were also doing it for a player with a history of insubordination and bailing on his teams, and he was going to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of that season.
The early returns of the Irving-Luka Doncic experiment were a disaster, and the Mavs didn’t even make the playoffs, but they still believe they can play together and are planning to build their roster around them for years to come.
And with Kyrie reportedly looking forward to signing a max contract, he took to Instagram with some of his signature cryptic posts and memes to raise speculation around the league again.
Truth be told, no one can know for sure what’s going on in Kyrie’s mind, and that’s exactly how he likes it to be.
The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly interested in him, but that would require giving up on most of their depth and cap space, and that shouldn’t be on the table.
Irving also reportedly wants LeBron James to join him in Dallas, but that’s even less realistic, as the Lakers have no incentive to trade or waive LeBron unless they get Luka Doncic in return, which is obviously not happening.
This could mean a lot or nothing at all.
Time, and only time will tell, as it usually happens with the talented guard.
