Throughout his many years in the NBA, Kyrie Irving of the Dallas Mavericks has visited TD Garden in Boston numerous times.

On Thursday night, Irving and his Mavericks were there to play in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, which they eventually lost, 107-89.

After the game, Irving spoke with the press and made a surprising comment about the volume of the Boston crowd.

“I thought it was going to be a little louder in here,” Irving said, via NBC Sports Boston, referencing the angry reaction that he got from loyal Celtics fans.

Celtics followers do not like Irving and have given him an angry response ever since he left the team on bad terms a few years ago.

Irving mentioned that he has heard their boos and jeers for the last several seasons but he has gotten used to it.

He said it is clear what they are attempting to do: they are trying to get him out of his element and off his game.

It might have worked on Thursday night.

Irving scored only 12 points, shooting 6-of-19 from the field and 0-of-5 from the three-point line.

He was not the impactful part of his team that he was supposed to be and if he had played better, the Mavericks could have earned a much-needed road win.

Irving made it seem like the volume of the arena didn’t bother him but something was holding him back in Game 1.

Now he has a few days to get his head on straight, prepare for Game 2, and make any necessary adjustments.

Even though he didn’t feel the crowd was very loud, Irving needs to be prepared for even more volume on Sunday night.
