After watching him dominate in the Summer League last offseason, some Los Angeles Lakers fans thought we were about to see a Max Christie breakout season.

He’s a solid 3-and-D wing and looked like just what the team lacked at times, yet he couldn’t find his way into Darvin Ham’s rotation.

His minutes went up and down all year long and even started a couple of games, but he couldn’t establish himself as a steady contributor there.

Nonetheless, it seems like the Lakers still want him around.

According to a report by Jovan Buha of The Athletic, the Lakers intend to keep him when he enters restricted free agency this offseason.

Is this a smart move by the Lakers or would that roster spot be better filled by someone else? pic.twitter.com/kJqgb2Eq4W

This clearly makes sense for Rob Pelinka and company.

They’ll be able to keep him around at a discount, as he’s not likely to get that much money somewhere else after barely playing in his first two years in the league.

Of course, the Lakers should also focus on some bigger names in free agency and the trade market, but Christie definitely has the upside and talent to become an impactful player for this team.

The Lakers will reportedly be very aggressive in trading their first-round picks to land another star, so having a young player on a team-friendly deal could be huge for them.
