The Los Angeles Lakers have been one of the most highly discussed teams of the NBA offseason.

They started the offseason by firing their head coach, which turned into a saga that went on for several weeks.

While they have officially hired J.J. Redick to replace Darvin Ham in this role, they were still left with many decisions on the table.

One of which, was the status of their first-round pick.

There were several conversations taking place about the future of the Lakers, and whether they would trade this pick to acquire an established veteran for their roster.

Hours ahead of the draft, it appears that the Lakers have made up their mind.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski via reporter Evan Sidery, the Lakers are now planning to keep this pick, hoping to find a gem with the No. 17 overall selection.

Several prospects in this year’s draft could find themselves as meaningful contributors to an NBA roster.

The Lakers might have been initially looking to find a veteran to fill in some gaps for them, but they seem to be willing to take a risk on an unknown prospect.

Seeing that they haven’t found the success they have been seeking in recent seasons, it could be time for the Lakers to try something new in the offseason.

Whether it’s drafting an unconventional player or an unknown commodity, it will be interesting to see who the Lakers go with in the draft this year, both in the first and second rounds.
